For those of you who read my previous
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
i found the cause of the terminal understeer.I found it was indeed the tires!
The other day i bought two new tires to replace the worn rears and ,as you do with Fwd cars, got them to swap them round so the new ones ended up on the front. That meant the front tires i whined about last time are now on the rear.
And today by chance i ended up on the same road in the same wet conditions to give an accurate test.
What a whole different ball game!
Now the front sticks great while those dodgy tires on the rear are now providing endless oversteer amusement.
In fact i deliberately overdid it on one safe(ish) corner to see if it was controllable at wild angles. Um,lets just say that’s a firm NO....
Still ,its quite controlable are sensible speeds and massively preferable to dangerous i’m-just-a-passenger understeer!!

Tires make a huge difference! I went from fairly worn down Firestones to Falken... somethings. I forgot what they’re called, but they’re definitely sporty ones. My car was already okay in the corners, but now it can turn so tightly and so quickly that I’m worried my mudflaps will scrape due to the body roll.

Yup, reducing grip on the rear relative to the front is one way to reduce understeer - whether it be through stiffening up the rear suspension, or via the tires themselves. I was able to do that by tinkering with the pressures on my Jetta, but the handling was a little unstable .

Lol this gives me a good idea. Why not put totally bald tires on the rear of a FWD car to always cause oversteer? Or shave the treads off or something!

I had my last bit of fun with my worn out, bald tires yesterday. Found a parking lot of an abandoned restaurant and tried out some mega gnar drifts in the Z. Fuck that’s fun. I will say though, the 300ZX has much more of a tendency towards snap oversteer than my E36 did. It’s not quite as predictable once it breaks loose, but it’s not too bad.
After a little while I went and checked the tires to find some belt showing, so I packed it in and got some BFG G-Force Comp-2’s on it today. So much grip now in comparison!
